DESIGN AND EDITING
EDITING
This year, the Editor-in-Chief, other Managing Editor, and I helped redesign The Vision's webpage to give it a new, sleek look. I edit articles every weekend to ensure that there are no grammatical errors and to improve the general quality of the work.
DESIGN
I also assisted in making graphics for The Vision, and the pictured graph was used in my article "Bowes: Are drone strikes the solution to terrorism or simply mass murder?" to illustrate the fickle nature of drone strikes.
Leadership and Team Building
Every Monday, The Vision hosts a staff meeting to assign the news budget for that week. Many times I have hosted and or participated in these meetings. Often, I take time to address individual writers in private to assist them with journalism specifics and answer any questions they have about writing style or rules.
POETRY AND PROSE
The following poem won a Scholastic Art and Writing of MS Honorable Mention award.
SO THIS IS WAYNE COUNTY
Leaving the old dirt driveway,
Pines stretch as far as the eye can see.
Abandoned houses rest in patches of earth
Like old widows in their recliners.
Asphalt twists and turns
As a meandering river
That never settles, always restless.
The stoplight flashes
Like a dying star
In a dying town.
So this is Wayne County.
A Sunday morning,
Everyone going to church.
Blouses and button-ups
Elders in every nook and cranny.
Prideful teenagers,
Now models of modesty.
Racist adults,
Now advocates for acceptance.
Hateful old folks,
Ever careful to bring their Bibles,
A monument to their hypocrisy.
You feel like that;
You feel like saying something,
Like trying, attempting, anything,
Just to see a speck of authenticity.
You feel like leaving forever
Just to escape the cycle of insincerity.
Hello’s, Goodbye’s, How you doing’s
Those fake smiles surround you
Like a masquerade.
You feel like replying something spiteful,
Anything to not conform.
You smile instead and say,
“I’m good, how bout’ you?”
MULTIMEDIA
Journalism is not just online, for it is a part of videos, graphics, maps, and more. Here is a collection of some of my multimedia projects.
VIEWS FROM THE VISION: PODCAST
I recorded multiple podcast episodes for The Vision, and this episode was my best podcast by far at discussing important and relevant topics.
INTERACTIVE MAP
This summer as the Black Lives Matter group became prominent on the US stage, I spent over two months compiling an in-depth feature piece on Black athletes in Mississippi and their experience with racism and protest.
News Gathering
News gathering is one of the most important parts of being a journalist. Every week, the team of editors and I at The Vision worked to gather important stories locally and nationally important to our school or state. I have conducted many interviews and helped several staff writers perform interviews as well.
SPORTS JOURNALISM
Although I could only write about two sports at MSMS due to the fact I am a co-captain on three of our five sports teams, I still routinely reported on the state of MSMS sports.
WAVES BATTLE HARSH WEATHER IN OXFORD
BROUSSARD, COOKE ADVANCE TO STATE SWIM MEET
STUDENTS, RAS EXPLORE INTEREST IN BRINGING BASKETBALL BACK TO CAMPUS
BOWLES: SORRY USWNT, BUT THIS IS YOUR FAULT
Web Design
This summer, the editorial board and I redesignedThe Vision's website including the layout for our new app to update daily.
WRITING
Writing is obviously one of the key elements present in almost all journalistic content. Here is a small sample size of my best work.
WRITING (CONTINUED)
WRITING (CREATIVE)
Not only am I a student journalist, but I am also a creative writer as well. Here are two of my best works.
